Being newly married, I had no clue how to cook. My poor husband had to endure burnt rolls, burnt casseroles, and burnt oatmeal- yes, you can even burn oatmeal. You can actually burn almost anything… if you have no clue what you are doing. My Momma is a wonderful cook. Living in a ministry we didn’t have a lot of money, but she could make the house smell amazing in a matter of minutes. My sister loved to cook, too, so if Momma wasn’t in the kitchen, my sister was in the kitchen. I helped at times, but as far as cooking very many meals from beginning to end- it just didn’t happen very often. I was always busy with school, after school jobs, and activities to watch and learn from two wonderful cooks. Many missed opportunities, that, at the time, I didn’t even realize.
So, there I stood, newly married, realizing I had no real clue how to cook a whole meal- without burning something in the midst of stirring this, checking that, and amazed at how clueless I really was. There is a little thing called timing when you cook. I had no clue what to start when- to make it all turn out- “like Momma’s”. My husband was a champ through it all. He ate whatever I put in front of him. One night, I burnt the ENTIRE MEAL and he ate every bite. With many years and many failed attempts, I began to get the hang of it. With lots of calls to Momma and my sis, and recipe books from my grandma and my husband’s grandma, God helped me learn how to love my family by cooking for them. “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed in the man who takes refuge in him.” Psalm 34:8 Holidays are right around the corner. There will be lots of opportunities to meditate on this amazing scripture. As we are eating “Momma’s cooking,” we need to remember that the Lord is good! Every single blessing comes from the Lord, even the burnt rolls! God uses our mistakes and the people in our lives that will eat the burnt rolls to grow us into who He wants us to become. If we trust the Lord and take refuge in Him, He will teach us how to love. He will provide people in our lives to show us how to love, like only He can. Let’s not miss opportunities to take refuge in Him and learn from one another. Taste and see that the LORD IS GOOD!
